the watchdogs of goa
The interiors of Goa are lined with villages, villages with centuries old Portuguese houses, an occasional crucifix here a random chapel there, winding roads with only an occasional motorbike zooming by.
Everything is serenely ordinary and ambling past until you come across the lions and soldiers. They breathe a life into the otherwise still scene. They watch the streets in pairs and have been doing so for centuries.

ReplyDeleteWondering though, is there a significance of having the demon like creatures at the gate? Many old Indian homes and some superstitious ones still hang the ugly demon face to save the house from evil eyes. :) Looks like Goa's homes reflect a similar story (maybe).
My friends still don't believe me when I say I have never been to Goa. So many places to visit in India and so little time!

ReplyDeleteit is a common superstitious practice in many Indian cultures to pursue protective measures and guard their homes against bad luck or 'the evil eye'.
the lions are soldiers were originally constructed by the Portuguese as a symbolic gesture of both protection and grandeur...

There is an element of humor in these statues, or am I interpreting it wrong. They are beautiful, goofy and threatning at the same time. Really interesting.

Here in north india ... people use those ugly demon face to guard the house n its family from "evil eye" but those statue looks cute n add beauty to the house too !!
